All about Amanda
After graduating in 2004 with a degree in English Literature and German Language, Amanda soon got her first job in children’s book publishing at Miles Kelly. This is where she first met Belinda Gallagher, her editorial mentor and co-Gingerbread Moon freelancer.
Amanda’s dedication ensured that each book she project-managed was thoroughly researched, creatively written and edited with pizzazz to wow children. Fast forward a few years and she became the Managing Editor for a children's book brand collaboration with the Discovery Channel, working on a series of complex annuals that became bestsellers. She also headed up the editorial team at QED, an imprint of Quarto, before deciding that the commuting life was not for her, and freelancing was the way forwards.
In her freelance editorial career, Amanda not only manages the longer projects of writing and ghostwriting children’s books, or planning and replanning way-off-the-mark children’s books, she also happily takes on the quick one-off jobs of proofreading picture books or fact-checking non-fiction books for kids. In fact, she really enjoys proofreading, and is most disappointed if she can’t find at least one error.
Amanda has also worked to editorially support the content, sales and marketing side of children’s book publishing, so not only knows the market well, but also how to persuasively write for parents, children and buyers – whether back cover copy, catalogues or sales material – to make a book really stand out.

Fun facts about Amanda
Walking across Suffolk fields on the school run fills Amanda with joy, even on a cold winter’s day (not so much when it rains though). Suffolk is so very beautiful with its rolling countryside, cute villages and calm coastline. She loves nothing better than to sit, flat white in hand, watching the world and its people go by.
Amanda is outnumbered by five boys – two children, one husband and two cats. At least the cats bring her presents, even though rodents are not at the top of her wishlist.
As Amanda’s children are still quite young, hobby-time is somewhat limited to playgrounds, swimming pools and parks. But she (or rather her husband) has just put in a kitchen garden to keep her occupied, which she loves almost as much as the resident snails and slugs…
Aside from children’s books (and cosy crime), Amanda loves a cookbook. She has a few too many, in fact, and wishes she could say she’s been able to cook lots from them. Somehow she always finds time to bake a cake or batch of biscuits though.
Amanda has a keen interest in indie publishing, particularly niche magazines. The wonderful writing and design appeals to her creative soul. Most recently she has enjoyed Friends on the Shelf, Dulcify and Backstory.
If there’s a food festival going on, Amanda is there. She loves the vibe and enthusiasm of the producers. She often makes a beeline for craft chocolate makers, with so many Suffolk-born goodies. And yes, she’ll share some names, just for you… Pump Street, Wood Row Chocolate and Fiona Pâtissière.
